The Story Blanket
Once upon a time in a far away place, a long long time ago, long before TV or Radio, long before K-Mart or Wal-Mart, Storytellers traveled the land sharing news, songs and oral traditions. The Story Blanket was a focal point for the songs and stories he shared. The blanket connected the interesting and curious objects placed upon it. Each item held a story, sometimes spoken, sometimes sung. Some of the stories old, some new. Each a treasure to share and explore.
I use the Story Blanket to introduce students and elders to the wonders of nature, music, cultural diversity and story sharing. For our children, it’s a passing down of oral traditions. For our elders it is a trip down memory lane with a touch of humor. Participants are encouraged to start a Story Blanket Circle in their community and share their treasures and stories.
